deaths in the u.s. are being blamed on that storm that pounded the northeast with snow. marley, what's the latest up there? >> well, bruce, things here in hartford seem calm. and if you take a look behind me, you saw a car go by. the travel van that was instituted by the governor has been lifted. we are beginning to see traffic, but many roads here in connecticut are still impassable. that's also the case across the northeast. in fact, last night when two feet of snow was dumped here in connecticut, there were many people who were stuck on the roads in their cars overnight. even emergency vehicles, and snow removal vehicles getting stuck. so today, people are beginning to dig out if they can, many people's cars are completely covered with snow. >>> marley, there's a silver lining in all of this. they already had four deaths. what's the plan? >> well, many roads here in connecticut and hartford, more accurately, have been cleared for the road behind me, but many are still impassable and there is one death, actually, reported here in connecticut. the governor announced earlier today

is approaching $17 trillion. here is how bad it is in 2003 the u.s. spent just above $2 trillion. this year, the estimated spending will be $3.6 trillion. a 75% rise in spending in a 10-year period with no inflation. and what do we have to show for all that spending? the economy is not much better. the poverty rate is about the same as it was 50 years ago. and salaries for working people are going down. so why are we spending all the money? for what reason? i will tell you why. take a look at this chart put out by the pew research center. it says 48% of americans want smaller government and fewer services. but among hispanics, only 19% want smaller government and fewer services. a whopping 75% of latinos surveyed. approve of bigger government and more entitlements. that's why president obama is spending the money because he knows that a coalition of african-americans, hispanic liberals willganized labor, overwhelm the republican party. so, in essence, the president is putting party politics above the good of the nation. history will record that and a few years from now when president obama'

state legislature scott brown won that u.s. senate seat and found himself going to washington. now scott brown did not stay there long. he ended up serving only a partial term in ted kennedy's seat. when he had to defend that seat in this last election in november, he lost the seat as an incumbent by eight points. scott brown and herman cain were both announced this week as the latest contributors on the fox news channel. so that is what scott brown will be doing now with herman cain instead of legislating. while elizabeth warren has that seat now in washington. elizabeth warren made her debut this week at the banking committee that wall street was so eager to keep her from joining. her first round of questioning, she was questioning some bank regulators, demanding to know why no wall street banks ever end up on trial when they break the law. that round of questioning has already become as much as a viral sensation as might be possible for a round of banking committee questioning. spontaneously, i should note in the moment when she was asking those questions of the bank regulators about

the surge worked, what it did was extract the united states from a war that senator hagel believes the u.s. never should have been in, so he didn't sort of have that kind of strong push back. i think that truck made a very good point about what kind of sway he is going to have in congress. you know, the calculation of having a republican defense secretary as it was when bob gates remained as defense secretary for the first two years of the obama administration was to have someone there with the credibility to say, you know, this old cold war system can die. we don't need it. we can cut the budget here and put the money in cyber or put the money in some other activity that the united states considers relevant pursuing terrorists. right now it's not clear that he has enough juice with his own party that any of those arguments would necessarily work. i think that the white house has to be wondering did they buy the kind of authority from him and the kind of bipart sfwlan approach that they had hoped for? >> david, thank you very much. chuck, before i let you go, we've about the to talk about
